Nicolas Arendt studied History and Contemporary History at the University of Vienna and the University of Strasbourg. He is a PhD candidate at the Centre for Contemporary and Digital History (C²DH) in Luxembourg in a co-tutelle agreement with the Research Center for the History of Transformation. His research project is supported by the Luxembourg National Research Fund (FNR).

Current research project:

Title: The Transformation of ARBED 1973-2001. A European business and labour history.

The project investigates the acquisition of the East German steel plant Maxhütte Unterwellenborn by Luxembourg's ARBED company in 1992, analysing it as a case study within the broader context of Western European and post-socialist deindustrialisation. The research focuses on the origins, negotiation strategies, and consequences of the takeover, using a variety of sources including company archives, government documents, and oral histories. The study seeks to understand the transfer of industrial practices and strategies across borders during significant political, economic and social transformations, highlighting the interconnectedness of deindustrialisation in Western and Central and Eastern Europe.
