Theda Skocpol’s paper (1982) and the edited volume (1985) “Bringing the State Back in” became influential works in the field of state theory. More than thirty years later we will discuss what the authors failed to study, the varieties of the Soviet-type party-states, and what they could not yet study, the emerging states of the post-communist era.
