Basic Income: A Capitalist Road to Communism?

Venue: UC Alte Kapelle / HYBRID EVENT (ONLINE VIA ZOOM)

The idea of paying a basic income to people, whether or not they are working or looking for work, is one of the most radical and controversial social policy proposals of our time. How can the unconditional basic income transform capitalism and does it lead to communism, as many opponents of the idea are arguing?

The philosopher and political economist Philippe van Parijs is the most important proponent of an unconditional basic income since the 1980s. He holds the Hoover Chair of Economic and Social Ethics at UC Louvain. Recently he published (with Y. Vanderborght) "Basic Income. A Radical Proposal for a Free Society and a Sane Economy" (Harvard University Press, 2019).

The keynote address opens the RECET-conference "Economic Collectivism: Old and New" (4.-6.11.2021)
